Taking over a company just before a global pandemic hit would test any executive, but Michael Polk Newell Brands had already built a career out of steering organizations through difficult stretches.
Steady Leadership During Disruption
Polk stepped into the role of CEO at Implus LLC in 2020, recruited by Berkshire Partners after retiring briefly following his departure from Newell Brands, where he had served as chief executive since 2011. His background also included leadership roles at Procter & Gamble, Kraft Foods and Unilever, giving him years of experience across a range of consumer businesses before he ever arrived at the fitness accessories company.
The timing of his arrival at Implus meant pandemic disruptions arrived almost immediately. Michael Polk worked to strengthen the company’s operational model while keeping the business positioned for growth, even as supply chains and consumer demand shifted unpredictably across the industry.
Rather than retreating to a purely oversight role, Polk chose to stay closely involved with the day to day work of the business. He has said he spends much of his time on brand and business development directly with his team, describing the experience as being in the crucible with them as they make the choices that push the company forward.
That hands-on approach carried through the most difficult stretches of the pandemic and into the recovery that followed. Polk has pointed to the professional growth of his team as one of the most rewarding parts of the job, crediting their work for helping the company come out the other side stronger.
